What is Junior Cycle Music?

Students who do music enjoy exploring the new Junior Cycle Music Curriculum. The three main strands of learning are:-

  • Creating and Exploring
  • Participating and Music Making
  • Appraising and Responding

Students are given many opportunities to develop each of these skills at all levels.

What is assessment for Music in Junior Cycle?

In 2nd year students will create a portfolio of two compositions for CBA 1.

In 3rd year students will create a programme note. They will also perform three pieces for their Performance Examination.

At the end of third year, they complete a written examination and a listening test which is worth 70% of the subject grade. The practical exam comprises of 30%.

This course aims to develop the artistic awareness, self-expression, self-esteem and imagination of the student.

The music course is not entirely about classical music, but covers all types of music, including traditional music, film music, musicals, etc.

What happens to Music after the Junior Cycle?

Music in Junior Cycle is followed by Music for the Leaving Certificate.
